Not soon after I wrote about Martin Luther’s Evening and Morning prayers and the daily spiritual exercise of “commending all into the Lord’s hands”, we were given ample opportunities to practice it.
Such is the life of the Christian.
Confessing the faith and living it out, walk hand in hand.
No matter how thorough one prepares, a trip to the African continent always brings with it an added measure of unforeseen challenges. An extended layover at Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam tipped a number of lodging and transportation dominos that had to be resolved and righted through texting with Rev. James May by means of WhatsApp.
After 30 hours of travel time, cramped and full flights on KLM, keeping track of seven suitcases, long lines and early morning processing through Kenyan customs, and a rainy and stormy welcome at NBO international airport, we safely arrived in Karen, a suburb of Nairobi named after Karen Blixen from the book and movie Out of Africa.
After a few hours of sleep and my first cup of Kenyan coffee, Rev. James May picked us up in his Toyota Land Cruiser. We stopped for a SIM card for my iPhone in Karen and then wound our way down to the Lutheran School of Theology at the foot of the Ngong Hills.
Some of the roads were new and markedly better than seven years ago. Others, remained the same. And still others, over the years, have deteriorated with the rains, or no longer exist. Such is the case with the original road to the entrance of the LST.
Upon arrival at the new entrance to the LST, Rev. May tasked me with opening the gate. Not many instructions were given and coupled with the jet lag, Faye and Rev. May had a good laugh on my account. Once I figured out how to open the main gate, a room with a view welcomed our weary bodies.
Here’s a little video log of our arrival at the Lutheran School of Theology.
